Windy Oaks Red Night Owl goes perfectly with hearty meals

I was thrilled during a recent Windy Oaks wine tasting with their 2017 Monterey Night Owl Red. A seductive blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, it is produced, cellared and bottled by Windy Oaks Estate.

Windy Oaks has built an excellent reputation over the years and winemakers Jim and Judy Schultze deserve their well-deserved success.

Crimson Night Owl Red ($ 28) is a full load wine full of fruity flavors and aromas. It takes its name from winemaker Jim’s nocturnal trips to the cellar, especially during harvest and crushing. “During his walks in the vineyard, he sometimes meets the great horned owl who lives next to the cellar,” explains Judy. “Two night owls in the vineyard.”

It was during these nightly sessions in the cellars that Jim developed this red blend.

“Night Owl Red has some of the elegance that Windy Oaks wines are known for,” he says on the label. Winemakers say the blend also has a robust character that allows you to pair it with many more hearty foods.

Windy Oaks now has three tasting rooms: the original in Corralitos and now in Carmel-by-the-Sea and Carmel Valley.
