Getting off to a quick start and building an arsenal early on is the best way to gain a noticeable advantage over the competition. An easy time saver is not wasting time figuring out what to do with items or how to find them.

Wood

Rust wood

Survivors will need to collect as much wood as possible on wiping day. Trees are all over Rust island, and all players need is a boulder to take them down. Wood is the most common building material early in the game, and players will need it to craft a hammer, obtain a building plan, and erect a base. Additionally, the wood, along with the following item, is used to craft early game weapons and tools like the ones listed below.

  • Hammer
  • Construction plan
  • Stone hatchet
  • Hunting bow
  • Campfire
  • Storage boxes
  • Tool cabinet
  • Door key
  • Lock

Pierre

Rust stone knot

Like wood, stone is one of the four most important items to collect in the game. It is a structurally stronger building material, but it has a number of other uses. Stone can be mined from Stone Nodes all over the map. Stone knots are isolated rocks that sparkle as you approach. They can be mined with a rock, but a stone pickaxe is preferable. Below are some relevant tools that players will need to craft stone.

  • Sleeping bag
  • Syringe
  • Hunting bow
  • Lower quality fuel
  • Saddlebag charge
  • Bota bag
  • Water purifier
  • Torch
  • Investigation costs

To abandon

How to grow scrap

Survivors will use junk to craft a handful of items, but it’s mostly currency. Scrap can be used to purchase weapons, armor, and other items in the safe areas of Rust. It is also the cost of the resources required to research items to craft. The lookup table is also built with scrap metal. In addition to fragments of wood and metal, scrap metal is needed to build workbenches which are used to craft higher level items.

Scrap metal is all over the island, but there are a few places that will always have it. Monuments large and small have barrels that can be broken down into junk. There are also small piles of barrels in the water along the coasts.

Metal fragments

Rusty metal fragments

Along with scrap metal, fragments of metal are needed to craft dozens of important items in Rust. These fragments can be obtained in several ways. Metal Ore can be mined from Knots that look like Stone Knots, but with gray / silver veins. Molten metal ore produces metal shards. Fragments can also be found by picking up loose rocks on the ground. Another way to acquire Metal Shards is to recycle random items after looting.

  • Armor And Weapons
  • Research Table
  • Worktable
  • Sheet metal
  • hatch
  • Code lock
  • Mining career
  • Small oil refinery
  • Water purifier

The substandard fuel powers the generators to create electricity. Players will need electricity for traps, computers, code locks, and other basic additions that require electricity. Fuel can be made from animal fat and tissue. It is also commonly found in heaps of barrels across the island.

  • furnace
  • Lantern
  • Large medical kit
  • Torch
  • Syringe
  • Small oil refinery
  • Incendiary rings
  • Investigation costs

High quality metal

HQM rust quarry

Like Metal Ore, the Final Pickaxe Strike has the potential to drop High Quality Metal (HQM). However, using a pickaxe can be frustrating, as it will take a long time to find enough HQM for crafting purposes. Using a mining quarry and saddlebag charge to loot nodes is a more effective method. Some HQM net items when recycled, but most only provide scrap and metal fragments.

  • High level armor and weapons
  • Weapon attachments
  • Armored Doors
  • Surveillance camera
  • Vending machine
  • Turrets

Food

Through pillaging monuments, players will get various other food items like chocolate bars and granola bars.
