The online grocery market almost tripled in 2020
ROCKVILLE, Maryland., July 20, 2021 / PRNewswire / – The U.S. food and beverage industry has been hit hard by COVID-19. In 2020, more consumers than ever have decided to order food and drink online to avoid shopping in crowded stores, where they could be exposed to the COVID-19 virus. As reported by the new Packaged Facts report The future of groceries: online grocery shopping, meal kits and consumer foods, the online grocery market almost tripled in 2020.
Packaged Facts predicts that online food and beverage sales will slow over the next five years, although the pandemic boom in 2020 and 2021 will affect the market for years to come.
Shopping for groceries online is driven largely by convenience, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Packaged facts’ June 2021 National Online Consumer Survey finds online grocery shoppers most often report shopping online for convenience, with pandemic concerns preventing consumers from shopping in stores being the second most commonly chosen reason.
Nonetheless, many consumers identify the pandemic as the reason they first used online grocery options or increased their use of online grocery shopping. In Packaged Facts’ November-december 2020 survey, 35% of consumers said they used curbside grocery store pickup for the first time because of the coronavirus.
