The Fairfield Company has been providing bakery products for over 60 years
FAIRFIELD, Maine (WABI) – A Fairfield business has been in existence for over 60 years, providing locals and tourists with freshly prepared produce.
The business passed from father to son during this period.
“My dad started about 60 years ago. There weren’t any real records back then, and I was too young to know that, ”said Larry Hillman, owner of Hillman’s Bakery.
Larry’s dad, Lawrence Hillman, made his fledgling bakery a staple in the community.
Larry grew up surrounded by baked goods and took on more and more responsibility over time.
“I would come in for a few hours and help him make donuts and then go to school,” Larry said.
Larry’s father passed away 28 years ago, when he officially took over.
There is a relaxed and family atmosphere between staff and customers.
“I mean, I’ve been here 27 years, so I would recognize a lot of faces,” said Theresa Rogers, cake decorator.
“I made my son Jason work here. He was a baker. And my granddaughter, Domika, was a baker too, ”said Sharon Stowe, a baker who has worked at Hillman’s Bakery for 28 years.
“My two daughters worked here. My granddaughter worked here until I was eighteen, ”Rogers said.
“I’ve had a lot of great employees over the years,” Larry said.
But, Larry says it’s getting harder and harder to find staff, and he hopes to find someone to train to take over the business when he decides to retire.
“I have three kids but none of them are really interested in it, they have their own careers,” said Larry.
Business has slowed down during the pandemic as well, but Larry says he’s happy things are picking up.
“There are a lot of people who enjoy making their special birthday cake or special treats,” said Larry.
You can find Hillman’s Bakery at 16 Western Avenue in Fairfield.
