ORLANDO, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire) – Fast food has been a staple of American life since the first White Castle opened in 1921. But now, with over 200,000 fast food businesses and a new option around every corner, dining fast quickly makes Americans a super-size. The CDC reports that more than a third of all Americans eat fast food on any given day. We all know it’s not the best option for our health, but there are some surprising side effects to what could happen if you gave up on fast food.
What’s your favorite fast food?
âI love pizza,â said Ron Rovito.
âI like fast food. I love chicken fingers, fries, coke and my favorite chocolate milkshakes, âsaid Sean McMonagle.
So what if you give it up? You have a lower risk of heart disease and diabetes. But experts say you’re also less at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Studies show that the hallmark Alzheimer’s disease protein, beta-amyloid, was higher in people with a diet high in junk food. And with less blood sugar, experts say you won’t just lose weight, your mood can improve too! Researchers have found that a fast food diet can damage neurons and even cause depression. But if you’re one of the more than 84 million Americans who eat fast food every day, experts say start small.
“Oh, my kids, they’ll tell you McDonald’s fries are the best fries ever, and I agree they have great fries, but we don’t have to eat them every week.” Said Misti Neal, MS, RD, Director of Food and Nutrition at South West General Hospital.
Researchers warn that quitting fast food can also lead to withdrawals marked by irritability, mood swings and cravings, and say these symptoms should decrease over time as fast food is being phased out. However, the good news is that as your gut microbes change with your diet, you will also start to crave more natural, whole foods!
