In 2020, the province of Ontario reopened community gardens and declared them a “critical source of fresh food” for people, including those facing food insecurity, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, thanks to Renfrew County in collaboration with the province, Laurentian Valley received funds to help build the two gardens and also secured numerous in-kind donations to build two community gardens offering a total of 34 garden plots.

Families or individuals could choose from two different plot sizes – 8 × 12 or 12 × 12 – with the plots properly spaced to meet COVID-19 physical distancing requirements. The cost of renting the plots was $ 10 and $ 20 respectively, with all profits going to the food bank. Grants were offered to those who could not afford the plot fees but wanted to cultivate a garden.

The purpose of the gardens is to provide people with opportunities to connect, learn and enjoy a healthy outdoor activity. Community gardens provide space to grow crops that might otherwise not be accessible, increasing the availability of fresh food for those in need. The township looks forward to next year’s gardening season and hopes to see continued growth in participation from community members.
