In the 1980s, as a young mother of four children under the age of five, I read in Penelope Leach’s excellent book that beans on toast, an apple and a glass of milk were a perfectly balanced diet. On Friday I looked after four grandchildren aged five and under and that’s what they had for tea. DoraMarr

Fish and potatoes. Ask the coastal Britons, Portuguese, North Germans, French Normans, Dutch, etc. Of course, that’s if it really had to be, what is the object of the exercise, isn’t it? Potatoes for almost everything, fish for the rest. You’ll probably need to crease the fish bones a bit, otherwise you might run out of calcium. As a healthcare professional, I once had concerns about a patient I saw who only ate Weetabix with whole milk. A dietician friend reassured me that they could manage on this diet for a while: the cereal gives you carbohydrates and fiber, is fortified with vitamins, and the milk gives you fat and protein. cherry

Rice and beans. All essential amino acids; lots of fiber; vitamins; carbohydrates for energy. Many people around the world have this as the basis of their diet. meansardine

Of course, what counts as a healthy diet will depend on physiology, genetics, psychology and the individual’s socio-cultural background and needs, but if we were to create the minimalist diet suitable for most people, a diet with very little variety would be sub-optimal for the microbiome, so perhaps impossible to call it completely healthy – then one would prioritize fats and proteins over carbs, as they are necessary for the synthesis of all types of tissues, hormones and almost all biological molecules, and they provide enough energy.

Second, getting the best micronutrients in the densest sources possible, including things like choline in egg yolks, which is often overlooked.

I think it would look something like this: eggs with yolks, wild salmon, liver, kale and blueberries. This pretty much covers all micro and macronutrient needs.

The entire “just eat this legume” brigade is lacking in vitamin B12, fat, and a full set of amino acids, to say the least. I think they confuse “healthy and balanced” with “cheap and vegan”. Benji FM
