Meet the Spennymoor trucker who loves to bake pies
A TRUCKER makes his colleagues and customers smile with a series of special deliveries – of his delicious homemade pies.
Mark Sumpton, from Spennymoor, is a truck driver who has traveled the country and Europe.
But these days he often has a savory pastry treat with him.
Having started in her kitchen baking a pie for work, her love of food grew into something bigger.
Mr Sumpton said: “Everyone loves pies. I am a truck driver by trade, but cooking is my passion.
“I cook for everyone, there is no me in being a cook.
“There’s something about it, there’s that ‘yum’ factor.
“I make all kinds of pies, corn beef, ground meat, cheese, I’ll do it.”
He added: “The idea behind it was that I love to cook and that I would take pies to work for the guys.
“They liked the pies so much it stuck, and I’ve been making them ever since.
“I love that people care about my pies, it really makes them smile.
“People ask me why I do it because there is no financial benefit. Baking pies can get expensive, but I think seeing people’s reactions outweighs any cost.
“I often say that there are nice people in the world, and feeding them makes them even nicer.”
Mr Sumpton has also been influenced by his truck driving in Europe and hopes to learn from his trips back home.
He added: “I have been strongly influenced by Europe, I love their food.
“I’m building a pizza oven to make fresh pizzas, the right way.
“I would love to open a European style restaurant, it’s a dream of mine because they do the food the right way.
“However, for now, I will continue to make pies for people, maybe a healthier option.
“My life is cooking and I’m always on the lookout for kitchen gadgets and new recipes to find the perfect dish.”
Mr. Sumpton runs Cordon Grub, a Facebook group for sharing his food and for others to share their creations.
