Baan Phadthai, Shin’Labo and more

Things are looking up for foodies in May 2022 as a number of restaurants make their presence felt in KL and PJ. What to expect outside of Hari Raya Open Days and Mother’s Day celebrations? A lot!

Check out these KL and PJ restaurants and bars in May 2022:

The Lemon Tree opens at Tropicana, Petaling Jaya

If Lavo is your go-to spot for evening happy hour at PJ, the nearby Lemon Tree should be where you head for breakfast. The cafe, with a bright and welcoming ambience encapsulated by a greenhouse, offers an all-day breakfast, but more appealingly, an extensive menu of pastries, breads, cakes, coffees and teas.

Inspired by the Victorian era, the 1,700 square foot cafe, in addition to resembling a lemon tree, features a domed ceiling, brightly colored furniture and multi-story glass coverings – evoking the feeling of dining outdoors, except you’re still bathed in natural light lounging in air-conditioned comfort.

Opt for the blueberry danish, the garden focaccia, an assortment of croissants and fruit tarts. If the tastes of café latte, mocha, chamomile tea and green tea are overdue, get the café’s signature iced teas – Tangy Pear Honey-nade, Citrus Yuzu Oolong and more.

The lemon tree is located on the ground floor, Menara Lien Hoe, Persiaran Tropicana, 47410 Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Call 011-5763 0433 to book. It opens daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Baan Phadthai opens at Kuala Lumpur Pavilion

Baan Phadthai is one of many new cafes and restaurants that have recently opened at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. Not just any Thai street food restaurant, however, as Baan Phadthai has a benchmark that is second to none. Its Bangkok outlet has been awarded numerous times by the Michelin Guide Bangkok.

What to order here, but its plethora of phad thais – from delicious roast beef to extravagant giant mud crab? The secret sauce of his acclaimed phad thai is the 18-ingredient sauce and “Sen Jan” rice noodles. The portion is generous. If that doesn’t fill you up, a range of starters and desserts such as satays and mango sticky rice are also available.

Baan Phadthai is located in the Connections District, Level 3, Kuala Lumpur Pavilion. It opens every day, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Call 03-9779 9113 to book.

AlcoHall by Wholly Spirits opens at Qra Arcoris Mont Kiara

To cheer you up, head to AlcoHall if you happen to stock up on some delis at Qra’s newest outlet. Wholly Spirits has carved out a niche for its endless supply of independent brands – Eiling Lim, Hernö Gin, Scallywag, and others – in the Hartamas district. Unlike other liquor retailers that don’t offer you a taste when you make a purchase, AlcoHall is also a bar. Craft beer is on tap, while cocktails made with Wholly Spirits’ exclusive brands can be offered for a fee.

Since you shouldn’t drive drunk, non-alcoholic cocktails are also offered.

AlcoHall by Wholly Spirits is located at Qra Arcoris Mont Kiara, Lot LG5-1 & LG5-3A, Lower Ground 5 Level, Arcoris, 10, Jalan Kiara, Mont Kiara, 50480 Kuala Lumpur. It opens from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Cocktails are available between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Shin’Labo by James Won opens at Mitsui Shopping Park Lalaport Kuala Lumpur

Celebrity chef James Won of Finally fame has reinvented himself with a whole new offering for discerning foodies with Shin’Labo – an omakase experience that marries Japanese cuisine and French culinary techniques, while incorporating ingredients native to Malaysia.

The atmosphere is as important here as the food. Every step you take as you enter the restaurant increases your anticipation for food. And be prepared to splurge and indulge yourself. At the top of the list of must-haves are Hambagu and Korokke (James’ play on the Japanese interpretation of the burger patty and croquette), Hokkaido Scallop and Caviar (the best ocean catch with the most delicate – a clever juxtaposition of the natural sweetness of scallop and savory flavor of caviar), and blue shrimp served with James’ signature dollop of sambal olek.

Shin’Labo by James Won is located at Lot G13A & G13B, Mitsui Shopping Park Lalaport Kuala Lumpur, 2, Jalan Hang Tuah, Bukit Bintang, 50450 Kuala Lumpur. It opens from Tuesday to Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Click on here Reserve.
